Shibori Maekake Apron
The traditional Japanese shopkeeper’s apron
Dyed apron produced by Anything in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture. Used by Japanese shopkeepers, restaurant owners and workers since the Edo period, maekake (literally, “worn in front of oneself”) aprons are both functional, protecting the body by tightening the hip bones, and promotional, thanks to silk-screened markings on their front. Maekake aprons made by Anything, the last ones to be produced entirely in Japan using traditional methods, are woven using looms produced by Toyota over 100 years ago. This apron is dyed using the Nagoya Arimatsu shibori process on thick cotton cloth.
