Unglazed terracotta figurine created by the Konohazaru Pottery workshop, depicting a monkey eating rice. This charming clay piece originates from the folklore of the Kumamoto region, with a history said to date back to the 8th century. The monkey holds a ball of white rice in its left hand and takes a bite with its right, symbolising a wish for its owner to enjoy success in business and never suffer from hunger.

Sae Kawamata, the craftswoman running the last remaining workshop still producing these figurines, represents the eighth generation of the family business. The Konohazaru figurine tradition is officially recognised as a traditional craft of Kumamoto Prefecture.
