Chau-chau Dog Folk Figurine
Hand-moulded and painted clay figurine by the Masoo workshop, who took inspiration from Kyoto-specific sayings to create this series called Kyodorei, literally ‘Kyoto clay bell’.
This figurine is a playful version of the traditional Komainu guardian lion-dog statues found at the entrance to shrines. Containing a bell, it resembles a Chow-chow dog, offering protection against evil spirits while correcting misconceptions in a lighthearted way. The phrase ‘Kyo-kotoba chau-chau’ translates roughly as ‘this is not Kyoto dialect’.
