A beloved figure of Japanese folklore

Moulded papier-mâché mask, hand-painted by artisans from Yanagiya Reproduct, a group created in 2020 and dedicated to reproducing items from Yanagiya, a former workshop that created more than 50 folk art objects from clay, wood and paper before closing in 2014 after more than 80 years in business.

Inspired by the local myth of the white hare of Inaba and made in Kurayoshi, Tottori Prefecture, this mask continues the local hariko (papier-mâché) tradition, using Inshu washi, mineral pigments and natural glue. Each mask is first moulded using washi paper on a carved wooden mould, then hand-painted using natural pigments, a process that takes about a week to complete.
