Tora Doji Folk Figurine
This papier-mâché lucky charm has been sold as a souvenir near Horai-ji temple, in Aichi prefecture, since 1955. Handcrafted by a couple of local artisans, it takes the form of a tiger, the animal with which the shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa was associated. A symbol of strength and perseverance, the figurine doesn’t fall over even when jostled. Each colour is inspired by a historical anecdote from the life of the shogun.
