Okoshiyasu Cat Folk Figurine
Hand-moulded and painted clay figurine by the Masoo workshop, who took inspiration from Kyoto-specific sayings to create this series called Kyodorei, literally ‘Kyoto clay bell’.
Containing a bell, this figurine is inspired by the traditional Maneki-neko figurine depicting a cat with its left or right paw raised to attract customers or fortune and luck respectively. The Okoshiyasu cat shown here politely joins its paws together as a sign of hospitality and goodwill. The word okoshiyasu is itself used to greet customers who have made a reservation or who have travelled a long way.
