Kirin-jishi Head
A unique collector’s item
A unique hand-carved piece depicting the head of Kirin-jishi, a mythical animal from the traditional region of Inaba, in the eastern part of present-day Tottori Prefecture. Associated with the traditional Kirin-jishi mai dance, intended to bring good health, the animal, depicted dressed in bright red, wishes good fortune to all it encounters. This unique piece was sculpted by Akira Fukuda, a craftsman who studied under Shoya Yoshida, a local doctor who worked tirelessly to promote Tottori’s folk crafts, spreading their reputation far beyond the region’s borders.
