Tenjin, god of literature and academia

This terracotta figurine is hand-moulded and painted by the artisans of Yanagiya Reproduct, a studio set up in 2020 and dedicated to reproducing items from Yanagiya, a former workshop in the Inaba region that created more than 50 folk items in clay and wood.

Made in Tottori since before the Meiji era, these figurines represent Tenjin, the god of study and learning in the Shinto religion. Dounai means ‘inside a cave’, echoing the practice of placing statues of the gods in caves.
